Over the last few years, a growing number of retailer's shop fronts are being badly graffiti scratched and acid etched. The graffiti is usually caused by forcing a hard metal object such as a knife, screwdriver, spark plug or cutter over the surface of the glass, whilst the acid etching is a result of spray paint or harsh liquids such as oils being applied.

Problems also occur when trying to clean or remove brick dust, paint or labels from the glass - the use of scrappers lead to large replacement costs.
